Sound Diary #5 (Oct. '20-Feb. '21)

about

After recording these sounds, I had begun making tape loops of an old man playing harmonica in the nearby park, and a young woman practicing flute (sounds drifting from a window onto the street). Layering these sounds at different delayed tape speeds, a certain "orchestral"/synth-like drone underscores the sound collage.

*All sound sources were recorded October 2020-February 2021 in Taiwan:

Most of the field notes were lost, but here's what I remember... Lunar New Year’s pop songs in department store, bike bells, Buddhist drums and gong, birds in Jiancheng park, shortwave radio (international naval signals), wrist watch, Taoist street parade, dozens of "claw machine" music, Tamshui ah-gei restaurant, Bernard Herrmann loop, tea kettle, driving spikes, sneezing, whistling in hallway , bike horns of a sweet potato seller , old woman’s walking cane...and more.

The various sounds were captured via Sony TCM-20DV cassette recorder on a 1990 Sony HF-60 Pure Gamma cassette tape. These sounds have been mixed, layered, and condensed into a sound meditation centered on multiple tape loops at various tape speeds with tape delay: young woman playing flute, old man playing harmonica
