While recording these sounds, the Wan-an No. 43 Air Raid Drill occurred mid-July. After feeling an initial sense of anxiety, I couldn’t help but notice the droning whir had a particular musical pitch (apparently an F#). After compiling these sounds on cassette, I made several tape loops at various speeds that altered the initial pitch, and layered the notes over the other found sounds. After repeated listens, the re-appropiated sounds of impending doom feels like an affirmation of life beneath it…The looming threat isn’t ever erased, but neither is the beauty of Taiwan and its people.
*All sound sources were recorded July-September 2020 in Taiwan:
...Wan-an No. 43 Air Raid Drill, children playing at Baishan Beach, Hualien taxi drivers speaking over handheld transceivers, postal workers loading trucks, washing machine, old man drinking tea and listening to traditional Taiwanese music on radio, neighbourhood announcement truck, more radio music in park, construction workers driving spikes and dropping metal poles, old man playing saxophone, San Yu Tian Guan Temple bells, apartment party (unknown instruments), opening beer cans, MRT Green Line arrival theme, Puji Temple chants, various birds in Shiding, Hualing Park birds, a hawk, passing traffic, and more...
The various sounds were documented via Sony TCM-20DV cassette recorder on a 1990 Sony HF-60 Pure Gamma cassette tape. These sounds have been mixed, layered, and condensed into a sound meditation centered on multiple tape loops at various tape speeds: Wan-an No. 43 Air Raid Drill (originally pitched to F#).
